History
Arcam AB was founded in February 1997. The development
of the company's patent protected technology started in
co-operation with Chalmers University of Technology. The
first production model of the machine was launched in 2002.
Already in 1993, an application was filed for a patent describing
the principle of melting electrically conductive powder,
level by level, with an electric beam technique, for the
manufacturing of three-dimensional bodies. By using metal
powder, there are unlimited possibilities provided to use
materials free of choice, which opens up for completely
new application areas for the technology. The development work was in the beginning carried out in
collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology in
Gothenburg. In the beginning of 1997 Arcam AB was founded
and the development work was continued by Arcam AB, with
the objective to further develop and commercialise the fundamental
idea behind the patent. The Arcam CAD to Metal® Technology was patented in
spring 1997. At the same time, a new laboratory was built,
where the development was concentrated and a new product
development team taken on.
2002 became a turning point in the history of Arcam. With
two units sold and installed at clients, the technology
was at last ready for commercialization. The first production
model of the machine was launched at Euromold in Frankfurt
at the end of 2002.
Arcam today has about 30 installations throughout the world. The systems are predominantly used in aerospace and implant applications.
The technology is patent protected in 24 countries including
Sweden. The trademark Arcam is protected in 21 countries. |
