Arcam History
Arcam AB was founded in February 1997. The development of the company's patent protected technology started in co-operation with Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The first production model of the machine was launched in 2002.
Already in 1993, an application was filed for a patent describing the principle of melting electrically conductive powder, layer by layer, with an electric beam, for the manufacturing of three-dimensional bodies. With the use of metal powder, there are unlimited possibilities to use materials free of choice, which opens up for wide application areas for the technology.
The development work was in the beginning carried out in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. In the beginning of 1997 Arcam AB was founded and the development work was continued by Arcam AB, with the objective to further develop and commercialize the fundamental idea behind the patent.
2002 became a turning point in the history of Arcam. With two units sold and installed at clients, the technology was finally ready for commercialization. The first production model, the EBM S12, of the machine was launched at Euromold in Frankfurt at the end of 2002.
In 2006 Arcam passed a very important milestone for the medical implant industry. Adler Ortho Group, the Italian manufacturer of orthopaedic implants, launched the CE- certified hip implant Fixa Ti-Por on the European market. Several CE-certified implants manufactured with the EBM technology have been launched after this breakthrough.
In 2007 Arcam released the next production model, the larger Arcam A2, primarily for production of large structural parts for the aerospace industry.
In 2009 Arcam released the next generation EBM production platform, the Arcam A1, specifically developed for medical implant manufacturing.
Arcam today has more than 50 installations throughout the world. The systems are predominantly used in aerospace and implant applications. The EBM technology is patent-protected in 24 countries including Sweden. The trademark Arcam is protected in 21 countries.
