Medical implants
Arcam’s CAD to Metal® technology lends itself particularly well to implant
manufacturing. Standard implants can be manufactured quickly and
cost-efficiently in production batches. The technology offers rational
production of small lots as well as customization of designs, adding
important capabilities to the implant industry.
A unique feature is the possibility to build parts with designed porosity
and scaffolds, which enables the building of implants with a solid core and
a porous surface, to facilitate bone ingrowth. With traditional processes
such coatings are usually sprayed onto the part’s surface in a separate
production step, but in Arcam’s process the solid and porous parts are built
simultaneously.
Using CT scan data, it is possible to build custom designed implants that
perfectly match the shape of the patient’s bones. This method can be used to
custom design orthopaedic devices, as well as bone plates for severe bone
fractures and lost bone from cancer resections.
The ability to directly build complex geometries makes Arcam’s CAD to Metal®
technology viable for economical manufacture of fully functional implants.
The process uses standard biocompatible materials, such as Ti6Al4V ELI, Ti
Grade 2 and Cobalt-Chrome.
